The Ajñā Chakra, often called the “Third Eye,” is the seat of intuition, inner wisdom, and higher perception. Located between the eyebrows, it is symbolised by a deep indigo colour and represented with a lotus of two petals.
The word Ajñā (आज्ञा) translates to “command” or “perception.” It is said to be the command centre of consciousness, the place where the mind becomes quiet and the light of awareness shines through.
In yogic texts, the Ajñā Chakra is described as the gateway to higher states of meditation:
“Ājñā cakre sthito devaḥ sarvavidyā-pradāyakaḥ”
(“In the Ajñā Chakra resides the Divine who grants all knowledge.”)
Symbolism of the Ajñā Chakra
-
Location: Between the eyebrows (the space of the third eye).
-
Element (Tattva): Manas (Mind) – beyond the physical elements, connected to awareness.
-
Colour: Indigo or deep blue.
-
Mantra (Bīja): OM (ॐ) – the primordial vibration of the universe.
-
Lotus: Two petals, representing duality (sun and moon, ida and pingala) that merge into one.
Signs of an Imbalanced Ajñā Chakra
When blocked or underactive, you may experience:
-
Lack of clarity, confusion, or overthinking.
-
Difficulty making decisions.
-
Disconnection from inner wisdom.
-
Headaches, eye strain, or insomnia.
When overactive, it can cause:
-
Daydreaming and escaping reality.
-
Feeling “stuck in the head” and disconnected from the body.
-
Spiritual bypassing (ignoring real issues in favour of abstract ideas).
Balancing the Ajñā Chakra
1. Yoga Asanas
These postures help activate and balance the Ajñā Chakra:
-
Balāsana (Child’s Pose) – relaxes the forehead and quiets the mind.
-
Śaśāṅkāsana (Rabbit Pose) – stimulates the third eye area.
-
Adho Mukha Śvānāsana (Downward Facing Dog) – increases blood flow to the head.
-
Śavāsana (Corpse Pose) – integrates awareness and inner stillness.
2. Mantra Practice
Chanting the sacred syllable OM (ॐ) vibrates directly at the Ajñā Chakra.
Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and repeat slowly:
“OM… OM… OM…”
Visualise indigo light expanding between your eyebrows.
3. Meditation for Ajñā
Sit in silence and bring attention to the third eye centre. Focus on the space between the eyebrows and imagine a glowing indigo flame. With each inhale, see it brighten; with each exhale, feel your mind quieten.
4. Prāṇāyāma
Nāḍī Śodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing) is deeply effective for Ajñā Chakra, as it balances ida and pingala nadis, bringing harmony to the mind.

Living with the Wisdom of Ajñā
The Ajñā Chakra reminds us that truth is not always found in the noise of the outside world, but in the stillness within. By awakening this energy centre, life begins to feel guided—not just by logic, but by a deeper knowing that transcends the mind.
As the sages say:
“Yatra dr̥ṣṭiḥ, tatra manah. Yatra manah, tatra bhāvaḥ.”
(“Where your gaze is, there the mind goes. Where the mind goes, there your reality is created.”)
When the Ajñā Chakra awakens, life itself becomes clearer, as if a veil has been lifted.
